Death

So you're dead. That sucks. Luckily, it's not permanent. The rules of death vary from race to race, but they usually go like this:

  • The character is dead for a minimum of 7 days. (Some races have a shorter revival time, and other factors may make it longer or shorter, such as the Defeatist Trait.)
  • Good characters go to Heaven. Neutral characters go to the Void. Evil characters go to Hell.
    • On your first death, you always go to the Void no matter your Alignment, except in special circumstances.

To revive, unless your racial passive says otherwise, you must do one of the choices listed for the corresponding death in addition to the required death time:

  • Death 1 (First death)
    • Pay one Keystone, and do not write a board quest. (Note that a 10 paragraph quest will still be required if you have the Defeatist Trait)
    • Pay 35 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest. (A paragraph in Epic consists of 65 words.)

  • Death 2 (Second death)
    • Pay three Keystones and 10 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest.
    • Pay two Keystones and 35 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest.
    • Pay one Keystone and 55 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest.
    • Pay 80 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest.

  • Death 3+ (Third death or more)
    • Pay 150 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest. Paying one Keystone reduces this to 125 paragraph tickets, two Keystones to 100 paragraph tickets, and three Keystones to 80 paragraph tickets. 80 paragraph tickets is the absolute minimum it can be reduced to. Additionally, another player must pay 40 Paragraph Tickets from a board quest AND pay one keystone to help revive you. Your revival will only occur once both you and the other player have performed these steps. You may not help revive yourself with one of your other characters. It must be another player's character.
      • Death 3+ can possibly be undone through a staff vote if there were other factors going into the death (such as it being a surprise death brought on by the GM in a quest), but even in that case you will have to at the very least perform the Death 2 requirements.
      • If a death occurs through a character willingly sacrificing their life, the one who dies instantly goes to Death 3+ no matter what. This does not include Deathmatches.

  • Any level of death can be undone with a Tier 6 Sun Keystone burn. However, if performed on someone in Death 3+ status, that character must still pay 1 Keystone for the process to be successful.

When you return to life, unless you were in the Void, you inhabit a new body that is generally identical to your old one. (Although old injuries may be gone in this new body, depending on whether or not you want them to be. And whatever injury killed you is gone, of course.) If you were in the Void, you inhabit your old body again unless it was completely destroyed. Otherwise, injuries are healed as noted above.

Alternatively, after a death you may choose to bring the character back as a Revenant. However, in this case the character would be starting fresh as a brand new level 1 sheet as if they were a new character, with any items and such that they earned in life being gone. Naturally, Revenants themselves cannot take this option, however, for obvious reasons.

As long as an NPC has at least one Keystone to burn, they can automatically come back to life one week after death at the cost of one of their Keystones. After this first death, or if they have no Keystones to burn in the first place, reviving this NPC costs 40 Paragraph Tickets.

Reviving Personal NPCs is possible by means of questing for a Personal NPC again, which is generally 50 Paragraph Tickets. (However, they can be brought back under normal NPC revival rules if so desired, but then they won't be a Personal NPC anymore.)

Note that the base death level without modifiers is 15% of your max HP below 0.
