Ooe is an artificial dwarf planet located somewhere in the vast universe, so small that you could walk around the entire planet in a week. Thousands of years ago, it had been considered a wonder of the universe where universal world travel was simplified, but sits forgotten now that newer and more private methods of space travel have come into existence. The oni that wandered and settled Ooe thousands of years ago now occupy its mountains. It is currently divided into three parts.

"The Border"

The nickname of a massive city built more like a labyrinth that takes up one-eighth of the world’s surface area. Each building there is covered in doors and windows, each used as a route to a new world. It was once a lively place full of travelers, trade, inns, and fun attractions for tourists. Nowadays, though, it is a rundown city with trash, signs, and ruined tourist spots as a reminder of its glory days. The only one who can be considered an occupant of the city is Arz, who maintains and guards the area in exchange for endless liquor and food. He also serves as a guide for those traveling. That’s not to say it’s always depressing or deserted. The oni tribe all gather in the city’s grand park at the start of summer for their annual games, which usually includes feats of strength and athleticism. Directly under the city is a mansion where the creators of the world are said to live.

Mountains

Five mountains surround the mainland, four of which are occupied by four oni tribes, each one a descendent of the four infamous generals of Ooe. These mountains surround the border and lead to the sea. The mountains are generally dangerous to explore since the land is unstable. Avalanches and earthquakes caused by oni challenges are common. The fifth mountain is Mt. Ibara, a volcano that is home to Shuten, leader of the oni tribes, along with the four generals of the tribes. The upper mountains are snowy year-round, and the terrain below the snowline is mostly rocky. Animals, plants, and insects were brought into the mountains from different worlds, making for a wide variety of wildlife.

The Furnace

Since the world is too small for burial funerals, bodies were disposed of and thrown in a fiery cave nicknamed “the furnace”. Since few travelers come by these days, the flames have died down, and the area is almost completely isolated. It is now used as a religious ground, though even then few dare to enter because of the strange presence that exists inside. On the very end of the fiery pit, there is an iron door that is rumored to be the gateway to another universe. Nobody has been able to open the door, so what is beyond it remains a mystery.

The Oni and Their Culture

Oni are a type of horned demon from old legends. Unlike said legends, however, they show with more human physical traits than monstrous. The monstrous depiction of oni in old tales is based on their sober nature. The oni that inhabit the mountains are generally jolly and energetic when drunk, which they almost always are. Their traits vary from tribe to tribe, but generally have incredible strength and rather sturdy bodies which can endure a large amount of damage. They are always looking for a challenge, whether it’d be a fight or a drinking contest. It’s not rare to have humans killed in such cases. Humans that at least survive are admired, and those who win are usually seen as an ally of the tribe.

When sober, the oni's good humor becomes a violent and blind rage that can cause destruction and death. Higher level oni, when in their sober state, are known to cause earthquakes, storms, and volcanic eruptions. They are very stern on the idea of using what they have and are almost never wasteful. Therefore, wearing excessive or high end clothes and jewelry, having excessive objects, and either tossing or not sharing good food or liquor is seen as an insult and heavily frowned upon. They also value the idea of staying close and respecting both your elder and superiors.

Oni, being adapted scavengers, will eat just about anything, no matter what the race. When drunk, they only eat what’s already dead or what have been killed in a challenge. When sober, they eat whoever they see fit for food alive. Consuming or killing those who enter Ooe and are not able to fight back is frowned upon by the tribes and is punishable by exile or death. This rule does not apply to the animals such as the rabbits and deer that roam around. They eat them often since they are seen as pests.

Trivia

  • Because each world has its own gateway building designed by the inhabitants, each building in The Border has a unique style of its own, making it a cluttered mess of architectural designs. Gravity can also be warped in some parts of the city.
  • Passage is determined by both having documents and providing proof in the form of a mark or ID. Arz will occasionally break this rule and guide people around Ooe if defeated in a spar. Weak opponents and trespassers face death or an eternity wandering the border.
  • There have been rumors of seeing or hearing deceased loved ones in the furnace, even those that haven’t been disposed of there.
  • The creators of the world never leave their mansion and hardly allow visitors. Therefore, few people know what they look like. It is commonly believed that they are two sisters who control the conscious and subconscious.
  • As Earth is a common name in the universe, with a few hundred such named planets currently existing across its vast expanse, it becomes difficult to find the right doorway on Ooe to the correct Earth. Thus, those that leave their Earth for Ooe are often doomed to never return home.
